a most mysterious technique

This comes from a studio in Korea
All they will reveal is that it was done in photoshop

I first put this up on Facebook, but realize that the discussion needs to widen. I've compiled the initial comments and ideas in the first comment below.

To me, the shading looks like a half-tone dot screen effect...

When you zoom way in, you'll see within the dots are dot gradations -- herein lies the mystery!

there's always the possibility that it's not PS as all.. maybe Illustrator? The regular pattern does remind me a bit of the stain glass filter in PS.. and you could make a custom brush in a similar pattern.. but i don't know how to keep it from smearing. This is a nice little puzzle.. and i look forward to seeing a solution from a PS Jimi Hendrix out there.

It looks like the 'Stained Glass' filter under 'Texture' but it has some sort of rosette feature that doesn't happen in 'Stained Glass' by itself. Maybe a pointillist effect before doing 'Stained Glass'

Hey Anne....... I'm not sure how this done. It's intersting though. I'm going to play with this idea. It's almost like a colorized bit mapped halftone pattern. It's prety cool.

I think you have the over all black and white pattern as a base. The you go to where you would say, put green in the pattern. You airbrush in 50 % grey to get the middle range a darker 80% say grey where the darker area is. THen maybe 15% where the light area is Index in the dot pattern and it will give you a black dotted pattern that when you go back to CMYK you can select the black and change it to green. Same thing for all the otehr colors. YOu can do the 4 different screens for the lily the same whay. Start with what sould be the dominant color ( in this case, the yellow) paint that yellow after following the process above. Also you can change the size and the angle of the dots if you like.
you may need to take the individual screens out of the file you are working on to index them individually. Get it?

The variation in the color of the dots is made when the original
grey painting is just like that, a painting, not a blend.

There might be a few layers with "dots" brush... Linda, can we use the "pattern spray" tool? The one you used for making cork looking soles of weges shoes, remember?
