The Tartans of US and Canada, #AtoZchallenge

I had a great time last year doing two A-Z Blogging Challenges
One covered the Southwest on my On the Edge travel blog [master A-Z list here].
The other were postings on my SpyGirl fashion blog [master A-Z list here] by my alter ego Enid.

This year, I'm taking up the gauntlet here and will be blogging the tartans of the US and Canada, A-Z.

Did you know that there are official tartans for more than two thirds of the US states and for almost all of the Canadian provinces?
It's true!

I originally did an art series with state tartans and maps and exhibited them in 2003.
At that time, I found 28 states that had tartans.
I created the tartan art in U4ia [now Lectra's Kaledo] and used vector maps from Cartesia [no longer available].
For this A-Z challenge, I recreated all the above tartans, and added the rest of the states and all the provinces.
Now I have to get the map art revised.
This is from the original series. @2003

Does an A to Z Challenge sound like fun?
There is still time to join in with 1000+ other bloggers. The 2016 sign up page is here, and will be open until 4/4/16.
Come back to Pattern Recognition on April 1st, when I will start with A for...

  6. Wow, this is probably the most interesting theme I have read so far tonight! I never thought of so many tartans being available out there. I do remember wearing tartans years ago in a private school. Interesting too states have tartans!

    Good luck with the challenge!

  8. This is interesting--who "authorizes" the tartans? Where do they originate from? I'm sure these things and more I will soon learn from your blog

  9. Wow! I love tartans, but had no idea whatsoever that states had their own individual tartans. I learn something new every day and love it. Good luck and have fun with the challenge!
