Spoonflower x East Fork Challenge

Time for another Spoonflower popularity contest.

For this challenge, we were told to be inspired by the glaze colors of these dishes from East Fork:

I took the actual pottery (and other East Fork items) as my inspiration!

Traced them in Procreate...

Worked some Adobe Illustrator/Photoshop magic, and, voila!
I call it "The Dish Ran Away With the Spoon"

There are 2158 entries in this contest (yikes... it gets worse every time)
  • 03/28/2023: Submissions close at 3pm EDT
  • 03/30/2023: Public voting opens
  • 04/04/2023: Public voting ends at 3pm EDT
  • 04/06/2023: Spoonflower will announce the winner
I wasn't even close. I gave up looking to see how many votes I got. WAY too many entries.

The rules: Artists must use both East Fork glaze colors, Butter (#F4EDBA) and Piglet (#F2DDDD) as the main colors. Additional colors can be incorporated, but we recommend only adding neutrals and keeping it simple with no more than 4 colors total (not including black and white) to ensure your design coordinates well with East Fork products. Honoring the glaze colors is key!

Red Velvet Cupcakes for a Spoonflower Design Challenge

Time to vote on my Red Velvet Spoonflower entry! CLICK HERE TO VOTE

Vote for as many or as few entries as you like by clicking on the preview images. For fairness, designs are presented in a random order for each person who votes. Your votes are submitted only after you reach the end of the voting pages and submit your votes. There are 1403 entries in this contest. (Yikes)

It's a LOT of entries to sift through, and 1/3 if not 1/2 of the entries did not follow the design brief:
For this official Pantone x Spoonflower Design Challenge, we invite you to create a design featuring Viva Magenta, a color which was selected to represent the bravery to break boundaries, fearless optimism, and Pantone’s pillars of Art + Design and Science + Tech. Use only Pantone’s Ignite palette below for this challenge, showcasing Viva Magenta as your dominant color, sparking energy within an otherwise soft palette.

Pantone’s palette, Ignite:

18-1750 Viva Magenta, Hex: #BB2649 (your dominant color)

Hand Drawn Floral Fail

Here's a Spoonflower challenge that I didn't rise to. A hand drawn floral.

What's wrong with it, you ask?
When I uploaded it (five minutes before the deadline), it looked like this:
Can you see where the repeat is bad?
ARGH!

I went back and fixed it and decided to leave off the line work.
It didn't need to look "hand drawn" any more, I had missed the window of opportunity.

Maybe I'll add the lines back in. Not sure.
I'm liking the soft watercolor look:

Hopscotch Fun

I'm on week 4 of the Summer of Creativity course and this week's theme was Humor.
That's a puzzle in the lower left. Yes! Redbubble offers puzzles now!
Get the 1000 piece version and drive yourself crazy!

You may need this laughing exercise while working on that:

Spoonflower is doing a "Sports" design challenge and I'm adding the Hopscotch placement design into the contest. I think it might be a good design for bedding, which Spoonflower offers.
The scale is too small, I had to reduce it for the contest and will make it bigger after it's over.

Wait.
Is hopscotch a sport or a game?
Ha. Ha. Ha. Ha. Ha.

I'll update with a link when voting starts 7/30.
Voting is open until 8/4 There are 486 entries in this contest. (Yikes)
Not a winner. Boo.

Vote! Spoonflower Cheater Quilt Challenge

A QR code and clouds. My submission for this week's Spoonflower challenge.

What site does the QR code jump to?

You'll have to aim your smart device at it to find out!

Cast your vote here! There are 550 entries!!!

The challenge, from Spoonflower:
In the hands of our imaginative designer community, this week’s 1-Yard Cheater Quilt challenge is sure to break outside of the creative box. Think beyond the traditional 6″ block cheater quilt; the 1-yard (42” x 36”) canvas is your playground for color, shapes, composition and style. Will your eye-catching quilt double as a modern wall hanging and offer a sleek aesthetic or maybe you’d like to cater to children? However unique you decide to go, keep in mind that your quilt should not be set to a centered repeat.
Winners will be announced September 12

Monochrome Dot/ Stripe for Your Consideration

A new Spoonflower Challenge is up for voting.

The brief: This week’s theme is a twist on a community favorite, the limited color palette. After selecting one color (hue) of your choice, put your skills to the test by creating a repeating design only using tones, tints and shades of this hue. Black and white can be included.

Here is my entry:
Vote here until 3/26.
There are 755 entries, displayed randomly. Thanks in advance for slogging through them!

And the results are in...

How did I do in the Spoonflower challenge?
Did not make the top 25, alas.

The top ten:
Did any of my own votes make the cut?
Nope. Never did consider myself part of the vox populi.

The next challenge I'm entering is another "limited palette" theme called Monochrome.
This time, I'm entering a painterly abstract design, which I'll share next month at voting time.
Submissions close on March 13, for all you print designers out there.

Fluevog #vog_Fantine Print

The Fantine print needed no corrections, aside from some color adjustments. (Original post here).
Available on Redbubble items [I get a commission].
I also worked up a colorway for a Spoonflower limited color palette challenge.
The rules were to use "at least 2 of the following colors: Navy (#031838), Light Orchid (#D3A0CC) and Burgundy (#81001E) and black/white are optional".
I opted for Navy, Burgundy, and White, which turned it into patriotic goth.
If you feel like voting on my design, click here [only active 2/15-20].

Astro Cats

See it on Spoonflower

It's Astro Cats for another Spoonflower Challenge!

You need to see a closeup:
[I know, the repeat has issues... I'll fix it, later]
Here is the design brief:
"A true geometric "trompe-l'œil," geodesic shapes appear curved but are really made up of entirely straight lines. Create an original design inspired by geodesic lines."

Voting is open, now until March 7. Go take a look!

Spoonflower Mosaic Challenge

MOSAIC of web colors
See it on Spoonflower
It's time for another Spoonflower Challenge entry, the theme this week is MOSAICS.

I've been meaning to get this art into repeat for a while. It's the same colors as my Web Color Chart

web_colors_charted
See it on Spoonflower
See it on Society6
See it on Redbubble
but more usable for printing on leggings (or whatever).
Soon I'll have some! (Maybe I'll try Redbubble this time, to compare with the Society6 ones)

Anyway,
the Challenge includes voting. If you feel like helping me win the popularity contest,
There are 287 entries to wade through (and don't try to do it on your phone -- really difficult!!!!) and they're displayed at random, so no telling when my Mosaic of web colors will appear.

Voting closes 2/28, so get on over there as soon as you can!
Mwah!

#August2016crayons Spoonflower Weekly Challenge

Design brief: "Life is like a box of crayons, so color your world! Create a design with color and fun!"
crayons

I did some sketches of crayons (using the color of the crayon to sketch it) a while ago.
Thought they'd be the perfect thing to use for this week's Spoonflower Weekly Challenge.

Here's one of the sketches:

#Aug2016ABC123 Spoonflower Weekly Challenge

ABCs, 123s
Design brief: "Letters and numbers, the building blocks of our world. Let your creativity fly as you design with letters of the alphabet and/or digits to your hearts content."
ABC123_red-gold
find this on Spoonflower
Shall we venture backwards in time to see other design options that I came up with?
My building blocks:
I typed A-Z and 0-9 into an Illustrator document. I then printed it out several times, and cut some of the prints into strips using a paper cutter. I took photos of my various layouts as I made them. I know I could get a cleaner final file by splitting the elements in Illustrator, but it was fun fooling around with scraps of paper and I was able to try out different things quickly.

I got the letterform splitting idea from stumbling across the work of Cecil Touchon last week
(from WGSN? Artsy? Can't remember!)
